The budget-friendly Vitality delivers what the brand calls “2D cleaning”, which means that the brush has an oscillating-rotating motion. But the brand also makes brush heads for sensitive teeth and brightening brush heads, which feature a rubber cup in the centre, to polish teeth. Its standard brush heads are the Precision Clean and the CrossAction, which has angled bristles. Oral-B has different options when it comes to brushing heads for its classic brushes. To see one of the best electric toothbrushes from this rival, have a look at our review of the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000.

Oral-B’s limited charging options and less impressive battery life are the one area in which we think Sonicare definitely has the edge over Oral-B. The iO brush battery life is even shorter. This is especially the case because Oral-B brushes don’t tend to excel when it comes to battery life, with most offering a maximum of two weeks. We’d love to see one with a USB charger, as this makes it easier when travelling. In the UK, Oral-B brushes charge via a shaving socket plug, while in the US, it’s via a standard two-pin plug. On the negative side, the iO9’s battery life is not as good as some competing brushes at this price point and you’ll be lucky to get more than 12 days of use before it needs to be charged. But that’s okay because the OLED screen allows you to ditch the app and still enjoy most of its features. It’s slick, feature-packed and slightly over-the-top, with a full-colour OLED screen that greets you in the morning and flashes you a smile if you brush well.īut it also has Oral-B’s best brush tracking technology, seven brushing settings and a light-up pressure sensor that not only tells you when you’re pressing too hard but when you get it just right.Īnd when it times your brushing session, it provides a countdown timer on the brush handle screen so you can see exactly how long you have left.Īpart from brushing feedback, most of the rest of the app functions feel like filler. This brush is one of the priciest iOs, with an eye-watering price tag to match. At the moment, it’s a better buy in the US than in the UK, where its price is much higher than the iO4. If this is a sticking point, the iO5 has a panel on the handle that displays symbols for all the brushing modes, so it’s easy to see which one you’re using. You’ll have to open the app to check which brushing mode you’re using, unless you can tell by vibration alone. This, as far as we’re concerned, is the only real snag with buying this model.

There’s no screen and no brushing mode icons on the handle. Like all iOs that don’t have a screen, it’ll cycle through all the light ring colours in a congratulatory rainbow-hued light show when you brush for two minutes. The iO4 has a great brushing performance, a vibration timer, pressure sensor and four brushing modes. Like all iO brushes, the iO4 comes with a travel case and, like the more budget-friendly iO models, it uses the same charger as classic Oral-B brushes and takes 12 hours to fully charge. If you’re in the US, you also have the option of the iO3, which you may be able to get for less but considering discounts here and there, there’s not a lot in it. The iO4 is one of the most budget-friendly iO models. You’ll only get 10 days of use – or less if you brush for longer than two minutes at a time. We’re not as keen on the fact that a brush at this price point doesn’t have a USB charging option, and the battery life could be much better.

The main compromises, when compared to more expensive iO models, are the monochrome screen (the iO8 and above have a full colour display) and a more basic charging dock that doesn’t offer fast charging. It’s also app-compatible for real-time brushing feedback. The iO range has Oral-B’s best-ever cleaning performance, and the iO6 has five cleaning modes, a brushing timer and a light-up pressure sensor ring. In the UK, we’d advise buying at its regularly discounted price of around £110. If you’re in the US, prices are relatively stead. Yes, it’s still expensive but it’s in the sweet spot where the best features meet the most reasonable price. If it’s within budget, this is the Oral-B brush we’d recommend.
